Objectives of the Skill Events

Objectives

Consistent with NYBA games, the objectives of the Skills Competition are three fold: 1) To have fun, 2) To teach skills relevant to the game of basketball, and 3) To model fairness and sportsmanship always. Effective Coaches model these three areas in all phases of participation, including the Skills Competition within their teams and in the final competitions at Home Court.

Eligibility and Limitation of Participation

Each team may have only one representative from their team for each event. (Two events per Division). In addition, the players for each event must be different players, meaning one player may not qualify to represent his/her team for more than one event. In Grades 3, this means two players from the team may participate, while Grades 4-6 will have 3 players participating, (it requires two participants for Two-Ball).  During the "NYBA Skills Competition", players will compete with others from their own age level and gender.

Selection Process

Coaches should replicate (as closely as possible) the contests during one or more practices, and allow healthy competition within the members of the team, to determine the "representative" from the team for each event. It is a "Skills Competition" and those players who have worked to develop their individual skills should be awarded based on that performance, and represent the team in the respective competitions.

Winners

Winners will be recorded at each gym and recognized on the League Website the following week, with photo if possible.
